Is kumon good or bad. In my personal experience I did not experience any improvement on both my math and my reading skills. The Kumon books are actually quite good Ive used some with my own preschooler In fact Id go as far as saying that in general the preschool Kumon materials on the actual Kumon program are also good for the first 3 or 4 levels kids tend to like the colourful fun nature of. In fact it is largely inefficient and in many instances downright ineffective and not worth the investment of time and money for a number of reasons.
I had a grade 5 student. I was good at Maths and English when I did it so perhaps my experience is not representative. As a result it doesnt really matter which franchise you walk into they are more or less the same.
Learning is not about doing the same thing over and over. It will make you good at arithmetic but thats it. Variation from the formulas is discouraged as the system of rote learning and repetition is disheartening but it really does work.
As far as math goes Kumon is useless because it just teaches repetitive calculations as opposed to problem solving and genuine appreciation of math. If you start them early its good. Why is Kumon so bad.
Kumon as an organization is run on a series of formulas. Its hard to say kumon is good or bad. The Kumon worksheets explain and guide students whenever a new topic is introduced therefore they can work independently.
In other words the program does not uplift the students or improve their learning or skills within the classroom at all. Kumon can be very beneficial but as a student repetitive learning can also become for lack of better words boring as well as discouraging. Such bad memories but all worth it after knowing what I have achieved due to it.
Technically if you had a 3yo with a great memory which is good in itself obviously you could teach them to recite times tables but that means sweet FA if they dont actually know what multiplication actually means. Kumon works in my opinion for children who need the basics number facts reading on grade level reading comprehension etc and for children who need the repetitive practice to gain confidence and help improve those skills that need to be route and automatic to them. I HATE THAT PLACE SO MUCH.
Giving an answer in the trillions quadrillions and quintillions is a blast and makes a kid feel real smart and justifiably so. In Kumon big numbers are rarer than hens teeth. Just playing around with big numbers is a fun and easy way to a solid number sense.

The Kumon Math program is greatly overrated in terms of its benefit to students. As a trial I stopped Kumon for a month helped DD practise with Bond books Letts papers. Consider Kumons Level 2A the middle of the three 1st-grade levels.

Trying to comment the opinion of those who hate Kumon at times but know it did good to them at times. Also the tutors offered no method or guidance they just let the children remember or figure out answers themselves. Its basically repetition which I dont think is a bad thing.
I put my youngest son in to improve math facts after third grade. My daughter used kumon for a while. In order for kids to truly retain information they should engage in unique and changing activities to help them learn in a number of ways and stay interested.
I think the Kumon maths program is pretty useful it doesnt have a lot of problem solving but it if you do all the work sheets you should have a pretty high level of maths by the end. Its teacher recommended full of all real life word problems challenging stuff to help her thinking. I believe it not only makes learning boring for students but also degrades them in a sense.
